Liverpool Biennial 2008

Review By LiveWire Critics: Georgia Jones, Keelin Birley, Barney Khan, Rachel Randle, Lauren Maccabee (Oct '08)

The highlight of the tour was a piece in the Bluecoat called 'Royal Art Lodge'; at over 45 metres long it encapsulates life experiences and feelings - some dark and some humorous - of the 3 artists that collaborated to make it. The piece was interactive in a way with earlier pictures effecting pictures you see later, I thought this helped draw you into the work more and made it easier to relate to.

The John Moores Contemporary Painting Prize Exhibition show a wide variety of ideas as there was no theme, only entrants for the competition:
Marta Marcé's entry was somewhat of a disappointment to the reactions of other artists and critics as it didn't show any real innovation and seemed to lack much depth. On the other hand Julian Brain's 'Special Relativity' was very enjoyable; its classic setup of a generic 1930s house seemed nothing out of the ordinary until more closely inspected, instead of the usual sofas and mantelpiece it contained porcelain dogs and instead of a mirror, a picture of the common items that you expected to see in the main room, this was done to show the difference between biological and sociological identities that were instilled in Brain throughout his life with all of the objects in the picture being symbolic of his parents or step-parents. The detail is as sharp as the social comment with an almost photographic quality.
