Cornerhouse 2

The First Light Movies Awards are the UK young people’s filmmaking Oscars. Every year a series of awards are handed out to be best films made with First Light money and judged by an impressive panel including Kate Winslet, Sir Alan Parker and Catherine Tate. The awards began by a special address from no other than Daniel Craig, Mr 007 himself.

This year, LiveWire (Cornerhouse’s youth group) swooped the Best Animation for Every Street Dreams, an imaginative short film made to dreams recorded on mini-disc one morning from a street in Rusholme, Manchester. The award-winning animation used a range of techniques including flash, hand-drawn and claymation and were tutored by Manchester filmmakers Debbie Steer and Hayley Saull.

The award was presented by Hollywood star Sean Bean who expressed delight at the group’s northern roots. One of the judges, writer John Collee, praises the film, “It generously embraced diverse styles… with wonderful authencity of the voice-overs.”

Winner’s quotes from LiveWirers:

“Livewire saved my life. No, seriously. My Mum is so jealous. Not only did I get the opportunity to learn more about an area of filmmaking that I’m passionate about, but I got to meet Sean Bean. Also, the trophy glows. What more could an aspiring animator wish for?” – Han Mosley

“The First Light Movie Awards were a great event and we were lucky enough to win. Hopefully livewire will be back there next year.” – Georgie Hewitt

“We were the first category in the competition and although the other competitors were much younger I wouldn’t have been ashamed to lose to them, but then when Sean Bean revealed the winner as us I was amazed and still am. Over all it was a great event just like the Oscars but better.” – Jon Ratcliffe

“I felt that the other animations were just as good and they were produced by much younger youths. As I got on the stage I was feeling so nervous as well as shocked that we had won. Also knowing that many celebrities were watching us/work and appreciated it felt like a great achievement.”- Daniel Little

“I’m over the moon at the moment because we won the award of best animation which is really prestigious.  I knew that our film had a very strong chance of winning because we all worked really hard on getting it up to scratch and we all had such a fun time making it.  I personally learnt a lot and I’m so glad that livewire gave me this opportunity of making an animation, and the fact that we won is an additional bonus”. – Max Igbon

The young people who collected the award were:  Georgina Hewitt, Max Igbon, Danny Little, Han Mosley, Jon Ratcliffe
