Urban Music EventSat 27 Nov 2004LiveWire was at the Urban Music Event at Gallery Oldham to screen the original hip-hop culture film, ' Wildstyle' and to also facilitate a documentary workshop with a group of young people. The Urban Music Event is a celebration of urban culture comprising of live gigs, music industry seminars, master classes, speakers, films and exhibitions. The day was electric with masses of stuff going on back-to-back in many different parts of the Gallery and if you were interested in urban culture and music and then it was definately the place to be! A group of young people signed up to take part in a LiveWire full-day workshop led by filmmaker Mark Haig and artists Carrie Williams, Mark Cameron, Saeed Moodie and Miss Holly Brooks, who came up especially from London to take part in the day! The seven young people and their Workshop Leaders worked hard to try and capture the essence of the day and interviewed the young hopefuls and the pros! I think what really made this workshop so special was when the singer Jay Sean appeared and agreed to do an interview. I don't think it would be an exaggeration to say that the female workshops participants turned a bit mushy :) Check out Jay Seans official site here for more info on the singer. Not content with just interviewing Jay Sean, we also set about interviewing DJ and Film Director Donn Letts who has recently released his new film Punk: Attitues. Click here to read a BBC 1 Extra news article on Donn Letts. The result of the groups hard work was the U:ME Documentary which you can view on this page. Not just content with facilitating a workshop at U:ME, we at Cornerhouse decided that the documentary deserved a bigger audience and we programmed it to be screened at exposures in December 2004. The films success was also picked up by Ruhubia Akbor from the Oldham Advertiser who wrote a half page article on the the group and teh documentary! The group of young people boarded a mini-bus in Oldham and visited Cornerhouse for the first time to see their film premiered. The documentary was well received and was even nominated to be screened again at best of the fest! Now how about that! To find out more about U:ME check out it is definitely worth a trip to Oldham on a cold Novembers day! Participants
The documentary has also been selected to appear on the Connexions Video Bank website. |
