Film Camp 2006The first LiveWire Film Camp took place in August 2006. For one week, 16 young people went to Borwick Hall in Carnforth with Rebecca McKnight and a team of professional Workshop Leaders and Project Assistants. The LiveWire Film Camp was funded by Cornerhouse and The Young People's Fund which is part of the Big Lottery Fund. Two fantastic films were made by the young people and much fun was had throughout the week. You can watch the films below. Just scroll down... KilljoyInfluenced by Stanley Kubricks film, THE SHINING, this film is a tale of mistrust and paranoia. It was shot entirely on location at Borwick hall in Carnforth and the young people were involved in all stages of production. They even composed their own soundtrack! Scratching the surfaceThis highly stylized film offers a surreal glimpse into the corners of a man’s memory. It was thought up, storyboarded, shot and edited in five short days by eight talented young filmmakers. Production Team:
Actors:Danielle Nicholls, William Haymes, Cellen Scott and Katie Dobinson Workshop Leaders:Dana Bruce, Mark Haig Project Assistants:Michelle Barlow, Marisa Draper, Lwimbo Kunda, Judith Lax, Julie Spellman Youth Projects Officer:Rebecca McKnight
What the participants thought of the film:Film Camp was a fantastic experience. It was a great chance to practically learn about all the aspects of film making from people who really know what they’re talking about. You get to create your own idea from scratch, then see them come to life…well, sort of! We were taught about storyboarding, camera techniques, directing, acting and editing, and how to use them to create the moods that we wanted. Whether you had experience or not, what the project leaders had to teach was invaluable. Borwick Hall was an amazing place to stay, how could we not make horror films in a place that’s really haunted? The camp was made even better because I got to spend a week with a group of amazingly funny people who also share a love of film. I also enjoyed the other activities like the documentary challenge and the end of camp party finished off a great week. I would defiantly go again. Review by LiveWire Critic, Georgina Amica-Carpenter
The LiveWire Film Camp introduced me to the process from start to finish in the making of a short film. From scriptwriting and storyboarding to filming, directing and post-production. I learned of the different kinds of procedures involved in order to come up with a finished project, as well as working with young people of my own age, and receiving help and guidance from the energetic LiveWire team and folks from Granada. Aside from the main focus of creating films, we took part in various team-building activities that directed the shift from a scattered group of individuals to a more close-knit team. Towards the end of the week we also took part in an acting workshop that was useful, interesting and highly amusing. The different ideas we shared when working together helped to give the completed films a whole new style and energy derived from each and every person involved, and throughout the duration of the Film Camp I met many like-minded individuals that made my week both memorable and loaded with Review by LiveWire Critic, Colette Talbot
LiveWire Film Camp 2006 allowed me a chance to get a real insight into what goes on during all stages of film production. As well as this, it was a chance to meet new people and gain new experiences – including standing on top of a LOT of plastic crates! (This was part of an outdoor activity involving a harness and an instructor J) From the very beginning, tasks were carried out in quite a professional manner, with people who work in the industry on hand to help, advise and give us little hints and tips. We did everything from scriptwriting and storyboarding to shooting and editing. Everyone got to have a go at the technical stuff and every member of the team was valued – where would you be without your gaffer? The week taught me a lot about what it’s like to work on a film. In particular, I learned how important organisation and scheduling are, as well as the co-operation of the team as a whole – especially when you’re out in the middle of nowhere and popping down to the local shop is not an option! It’s definitely made me believe that this is something I could do as a career and I intend to go on to university to study further. At the end, we came out with two fantastic films, but the week wasn’t all work, work, work. We always found time to have a good gossip and giggle. We played games, watched films, took part in an acting workshop, managed our way through a quiz and on the last night we had our own little awards ceremony, followed by a fancy dress disco – proof that none of us are ever going to grow up properly. I’d do it all again, several times over and only wish I’d got involved with the LiveWire team sooner. The only bad part of the week was knowing that it all had to come to an end at some point and we’d all have to return home and to reality.
